Briefing Battle #1 14th May - for IL-2 pilots
FLIGHTS
8 IL-2's - STRIKE - TS channel 1
4 Yak-1's - LOW ESCORT - TS channel 2
4 MiG-3's - HIGH ESCORT - TS channel 3
Communciate by whispers
MISSION
Strike airfields KLIN BH29, KALININ BC35 or both
Destory AAA, medium bombers, 109Friedrich
Leave all other targets to conserve ammo, unless stated so in combat
Recon flight (Jimmi, Gin) will observe KLIN and KALININ airfields for the most valuable target
IL-2 flight and escort will fly from MOSCOW to BORKI airfield BL35
Flight will loiter there until recon has reported what airfield to attack
If both airfields are suitable, we will first attack KALININ, east of BORKI
If only one airfield is attacked, we return to BORKI and head south to MOSCOW and land
If BOTH airfields are attacked, attack primary targets and conserve ammo
If only one airfield is deemed worthy, destroy everything
It is important to avoid direct flight paths from MOSCOW to the airfields
as they will probably be highly dangerous
FLIGHT PATHS
To target and home: MOSCOW-BORKI-KALININ-KLIN-BORKI-MOSCOW: 000-270-140-035-180
Fly directly to Moscow after attack if heavily damaged or low on fuel
But path is dangerous and should be avoided
If Moscow is too far away, land at BORKI or DMITROV
DETAILS
IL-2 flight will fly below 1000m at all times Normally below 300m
Avoid detection and disengage direct confrontation with all single engined bogies, unless stated otherwise
Both elements will fly abreast to one another to widen the scan area
Both for tactical and navigation
Cruise formation is finger four
Combat area formation is line astern
ATTACK PROCEDURE
In combat, primary target is to destroy all AAA. Prioritize rapid firing 20mm & 37mm AAA first
Rodeo/Carousel tactic is used to deal with AAA
Both elements change to line astern, breaks off into a large bracket and attack the same target area
from two diognal directions, but attacking two different AAA
This will confuse the guns between the two elements.
Next procedure is the attack itself
Not everyone will attack, only those who are not fired upon
Fly off-course towards the AAA, not directly
Only merge at the end before firing
Immediaetly when it opens fire at you, break off but keep wings level do not climb but evade sideways
Keep the wingtip under the gun at all times - this creates the greatest amount of lead for the AAA
If you do not take fire, destoy the AAA
The aircraft next in line will take over if you are under fire
After the attack, continue a large half cirle away from the airfield, give the trailing aircraft time to form up
Then head back in and repeat on a new target
The form up should not take more than a minute
Coordinate by voice with the other element to attack simulatnosuly
Form up and attack at the same times
EMERGENCY AIRFIELDS
From KALININ:
090 DEG to BORKI - fly 10-15 minutes. (safest)
125 DEG to DMITROV - fly 15 minutes.
From KLIN
090 DEG to DMITROV - fly 5 minutes.
035 DEG to BORKI - fly 10 minutes.
140 DEG to MOSCOW - Fly 15 minutes.

109F - ROUND wingtips (rear row of planes) - ATTACK
