Manual for the IL2 FB K-14 gunsight:
The K-14 is simple enough. The concept of the Gyro gunsight is that the sight will calculate lead for you, all you have to do is put your crosshairs on the target. Here’s what you will need.
Remember setting your keys to control the bombsight? Those same keys are the keys you will use to control your K-14 gunsight. They go as follows:
· Bombsight automation key = fixed sight/gyro & fixed sight/ gyro sight modes
· Increase/Decrease bombsight speed = Bf-109/Fw-190/He-111/Ju-88 etc… modes
· Increase/Decrease bombsight alt. = Increase sight distance/decrease sight distance
Your P-51D-20NA and YP-80 are both equipped with this special K-14 Gyro sight. Since the P-51D-20NA was the plane used during the war for combat, this will be the plane for our example.
You’re bending down to switch the fuel tanks when you hear the cry, “Fighters! 10’ O clock High! You don’t have much time! You quickly look up. To your dismay, you see that they are Fw-190’s and they are already opening fire! What do you do?
1. First thing’s first. GET OUT OF THE WAY! If you get hit by their bullets and cannon, there is no need for this tutorial!
2. Okay, you’ve gotten away and bought yourself some time. Using the plane type selector with your bombsight speed keys, select the Fw-190 option.
3. Once you manoeuvre onto that Fw-190’s six, place your hands on the keys for increasing and decreasing sight distance. These are your bombsight altitude keys. What you should do with these is make sure that the “pipper” (the moving crosshairs) is only as large and your enemy’s wingspan.
4. As you manoeuvre with the Fw-190, try to position the “pipper” right on him, keeping the wingspan within the limits of your sight.
5. Your “pipper” will move wildly around the sight as you manoeuvre, but don’t let it bother you. Once you see that pipper center on the target, open fire. He will not be there for more than a second in most cases, so keep manoeuvring!
6. IMPORTANT: The “pipper” is not a lock-on device. Meaning it will not lock onto the enemy plane like a guided missile. It is still up to you to control the plane and keep the enemy in your sights. This will unnerve you at first, but you will gradually get used to it.
Eventually, once you’ve been playing with the sight a bit, you will barely need it anymore. The sight will teach you how to calculate lead, and after using it for a few days, you’ll be able to clearly see what lead you need to pull even before the Gyro sight is activated. I hope this helps.
